These Seemingly Harmless Products Can Kill You

America is proud of its consumerism. This is, after all, a capitalist nation with a (mostly) free market and plenty of products to choose from. But while residents of Mississippi have the freedom to choose from a wide range of products, they also need to be aware of the potential risks. A cheap, seemingly harmless product isn’t always safe — even if everyone else is using it without any issues. In fact, some products in the United States can even cause fatal tragedies for you or your family members.

Here are a few examples:

The Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer is a popular choice of vehicle throughout the nation, and its rugged styling makes it a perfect choice for more adventurous Mississippi residents. However, this seemingly harmless vehicle is regularly included in lists of the most dangerous cars in the nation. Why? Because the Explorer has been plagued with issues since the 80s and 90s.

During the 90s, the Explorer was sold with Firestone tires, and this problematic combination led to a number of crashes. These crashes resulted in 271 deaths and 800 injuries. A further 3,332 crashes were reported during a four-year period from 2014 to 2018. In 2019, Ford was forced to recall 1.2 million Explorers due to suspension issues.

Blinds Cords

The CPSC has been warning Americans about the dangers of blinds cords for some time now. These cords can easily end the lives of children, who may become caught in them. This forms a strangulation hazard. As a result, families are now being urged to explore cordless window coverings of all kinds. 200 fatal infant deaths have been reported over a period spanning from 2009 to 2021.

Generators

Prior to the landfall of Hurricane Ian, the CPSC also issued a stark warning about the danger posed by electric generators. With many people losing power, generators helped hurricane survivors significantly. However, electric generators can also fill homes with carbon monoxide, potentially killing anyone who is inside. The issue with carbon monoxide poisoning is that this gas is completely odorless, causing people to lose consciousness without even being aware of the hazard. An estimated 83 Americans die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by portable generators.
